“Yeah I’ll take my name back”
- What does your DJ name mean?
- Zhu is my last name! Although I avoided using it for DJing cause of the other Zhu. But then I heard him talk in an interview and uh… yeah I’ll take my name back.
- What is your relationship with the music that you play?
- This set will be my favorite old/new songs filtered down to the ones I don’t get too tired of while doing chores. Hopefully I can put it all together in a way that’s fun for everyone :^)
- Why and how did you pick up DJ’ing?
- After seeing a few Cabin sets, I had the thought that even though everyone listening was having an amazing time, the DJs might be the ones having the most fun. So I spontaneously asked to play Cabin 2020 (that set really sucked, I’m so sorry if you were there) and the rest is history. Also gotta shoutout Deen for lending me his controller and teaching me the basics.
- What is the best set you’ve ever seen?
- Isoxo Nightrealm finale. Never have I ever needed a break after just 10m (in the best way possible). Yes it’s turnup trap but I swear there’s intention/musicality behind it all! Also my friend who doesn’t even like trap got hit in the face/bit his tongue but said he’d do it again if that means anything.
- Where do you find new music?
- Honestly just listening to sets, followed artists’ likes, and surprisingly… Instagram reels.
- What is an underrated genre in the current electronic music landscape?
- I haven’t been listening to music outside prepping for this set so… I don’t feel qualified or am opinionated enough to say.
- What is the weirdest venue or gig you’ve spun?
- The Battle of BC 2024 (Smash/FGC tournament) afterparty. The organizer knew I DJed and asked if I was interested. I nearly turned it down since I never played a “public” set and had no clue what to play for gamers that historically didn’t like electronic music, let alone the stuff I like. It ended up being really fun and this tweet describes it better than I could: https://x.com/tradewarhj/status/1774677602126508101
- What are you planning to play for us at Twenty:Four?
- Dumber and/or wubbier versions of stuff you already know (or don’t (and hopefully like)).
