“I try not to limit my sets to one genre, and I like pushing the envelope on traditional mixing rules.”
- What does your DJ name mean?
- It means very juicy jacob...but the honest answer is I didn't make the cut for my first DVC event as a DJ so I picked up VJing instead (VJ Jay)
- What is the best set you've ever seen?
- Daft Punk Alive 2007 at the LA sports arena. It was my first electronic music show, and it shaped my DJ style. A close second is Carte Blanche at Hard Summer 2011. RIP DJ Mehdi.
- Why and how did you pick up DJ'ing?
- My sister was a 90s raver, and she introduced me to jungle and house. She's also the one who took me to see Daft Punk, and that lit the fire. After I didn't make the cut for my first DVC event, I spent every day learning to DJ better and never missed another event.
- What is your relationship with the music that you play?
- I just play whatever sounds good to me. I try not to limit my sets to one genre, and I like pushing the envelope on traditional mixing rules.
- Where do you find new music?
- Mostly by listening passively to spotify or other DJs' sets. When something catches my ear, I make a note of it.
- What is an underrated genre in the current electronic music landscape?
- Liquid drum and bass. It blends jazz and soul music with a fast pace intensity that never feels rushed. There's real complexity behind the break, you just have to listen.
- What is the weirdest venue or gig you've spun?
- 15 years ago before dirtybird bbq blew up, we tried to recreate the original event right in front of the sun god statue at UCSD. Shoutout to tom hong all mike long.
- What are you planning to play for us at Twenty:Four?
- I’ll be playing liquid drum and bass for the sunrise set at Twenty:Four. This set can be enjoyed sitting down or standing as it will start off relaxing however it will slowly progress to more introspective and darker themes and will cap off with a “wake-up call” for breakfast. I’ll also be playing a mid-day nudisco set with heavy summer vibes. This set will feel more like a party at the beach rather than a sweaty dancefloor.
