“I would like to think I’ve learned something from my 20s”

  • Techno
  • Jazz
What does your DJ name mean?
“Jerry You’re Doing It Wrong”. It was coined by Volpato after I consistently made poor decisions that strained my relationships at UCSD. I would like to think I’ve learned something from my 20s, so the reclaiming of the nickname is an attempt to face my past with humor. It doesn’t roll off the tongue, though.
Why and how did you pick up DJ’ing?
I was an avid listener of BBC’s Essential Mix and simply wanted to make mixes with my favorite songs to listen to in my car. I learned how to “DJ” via software first; my mom’s computer came with a DAW (Acid Pro), and I would make mix CDs and hand them out in high school. It wasn’t until undergrad that I split a set of CDJs with my roommate, where I taught myself beatmatching by doing math on a calculator. We spun mostly Top40s at our house parties but I got to play house and techno during degen hours.
What is the best set you’ve ever seen?
This is a very difficult question to answer. I’m just going to list a bunch. Some of these are “best set”, but many of them are “most fun”: * ANNA @ Paradiso 2017 * Athletixx @ Los Globos 2015 * Avalon Emerson @ Barbazon, 2026 * Breakbot @ Spin 2013 * Carte Blanche @ Voyeur 2010 * Cirez D @ Coachella 2019 Weekend 1 * Ida Engberg @ CRSSD Spring 2026 * Jon Hopkins @ Coachella 2015 * Proxy @ Voyeur 2010 * Sherelle @ Dirtybird Campout 2019 * Solarstone @ Dreamstate 2025 * Trippy Turtle @ Splash House 2014 * Underworld @ Hard Haunted 2010
Where do you find new music?
Listening to sets, aggressive Shazaming, crawling Beatport and Bandcamp, stealing from friends.
What is an underrated genre in the current electronic music landscape?
Juke/Footwork. Mega nerds only.
What is the weirdest venue or gig you’ve spun?
I once played at an empty art gallery in San Diego. I think maybe five people showed up, two of them being Oey and Volpato.
What are you planning to play for us at Twenty:Four?
Techno and Jazz. I was going to write some introspective word vomit about how these genres represent conflicting energies in my brain—how I crave both structure and chaos. I think it’s more accurate to just say that I think it’d be neat to play weird music for my friends.
